VOLUNTEERING
When we read the papers and watch TV each day, we are bombarded with a lot of "bad news." Its easy to forget all the good that is going on and being done by so many people. Albert Einstein was once asked what the purpose of life was. He said "Why it must be to serve others. What other purpose could there be?" It is great to see that this spirit not only alive and well, but flourishing in the Newburyport area and across the country.
Eating well and exercising regularly make us all feel better. And studies have shown that giving back makes us feel better about ourselves too. Volunteering is up amongst high school students and that is great to see. There are so many organizations doing great things and we always don't hear about what they do. I recently had the pleasure of speaking to the Rotary about Pennies for Poverty. The Rotary was founded in 1905. They are the oldest service organization in the country. The Exchange Club just celebrated their 100th anniversary in March. Both organizations have made significant contributions to the community for over 100 years! Wow.
And you should have seen the smiling faces of the young ladies in one of the local brownie troops when they all took home a Pennies for Poverty soup can to put their 2 cents in each day and raised over $100 in a few months and we gave each one of them a Certificate of Appreciation.
If everyone in Newburyport just contributed 2 hours a month- a month, thats about 336,000 hours of community service a year. And there are 351 towns in Massachusetts. Imagine what we could accomplish with all those hours!!
On the Pennies for Poverty website www.2cents4change.com there is a Greater Newburyport Volunteer Opportunities for 2011. There is a listing by category and it lists all the organizations looking for volunteers and how to contact them. There is something here for everyone. Please take a look and sign up for something that fits your interests.
After the Civil War, Robert E. Lee taught at Washington University. He told his students "The great duty of life is to see to the happiness and welfare of our fellow man." Pretty good advice to follow! Thanking you for your time, this time, until next time. FRAN
