Retirement or The Next Phase of Your Life
OK, you have officially retired. You have had a luncheon or two, had some parties and received a lot of cards and letters. You've opened all your presents. Its the first Monday of your retirement. You've had a couple cups of coffee, read the paper, checked your email and skimmed through your Favorites, and maybe looked at Facebook. Its 7:45am. What are you going to do the rest of today, the rest of the week, the rest of your life?
That's what 77 million baby boomers have to start thinking about. Its a giant tsunami that is right off the shores of Plum Island or if you like the winter metaphor, its a giant avalanche about to happen on the slopes of Mt. Washington. All these baby boomers are going to have a huge impact on Amercian society. Who is going to take care of them all, where are they going to live, and more importantly, what are they all going to do?
This is not our parent's or grandparents retirement. Its a whole new approach. Many of us are going to live as many years in retirement as we worked. We have to rethink all the traditional concepts of "retirement." We are going to live longer and be healthier. This "next phase of our lives" is also being called Encore, the Next Third, or the Third Chapter.
I give seminars called The Emotional Side of Retirement where I focus on what is everyone going to do in retirement and I share some thoughts with them so that they can live a happy, healthy, meaningful and productive "next phase of their lives." I also try to "put the Gold in the Golden Years." I don't talk about the financial end of retirement. I focus on the emotional side or what is everyone going to do.
The USA Today a few years ago had an article that said 90% of people retiring do not do this "emotional planning." 90%! Yikes. Dr. Henry Lodge and Chris Crowley said in their great book Younger Next Year--"Do something no one else does-think about it, plan, scheme and get ready." Lee Iacocca said he flunked retirement because he didn't do this planning. Ernie J. Zelinski said " How well educated and highly intelligent individuals can excel in the workplace, and yet fail at retirement so miserably, is one of the sadders aspects of human existence."
I try to prevent all this in my talks. I cover over 18 topics, from establishing your own Vision and Goals, Volunteering, Working, Personal Legacy, Relationships and much more. You can watch the entire talk on my website at www.franlarkin.com on the Retirement page. Or if you would rather see me in person (VBG) I am also available to give talks to any community groups.
Let me leave you with this quote from George Carlin. "Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "Holey Moley' what a ride." And after hearing my talk, you will want to skid in sideways too! Thanking you for your time, this time, until next time. FRAN
