New Year's Resolutions (Well, Sort Of!!)

OK, how are all those resolutions coming? What, you didn't make any? You've already fallen behind? Just kidding. I don't usually make resolutions but instead I have goals and a Vision for the new year. At the end of each year, I find myself reflecting about several things as I mentioned in my last post. And at the same time I look ahead to the New Year and make up a list of Goals and possibly a new Vision.
My Vision this year is to be free of Diabetes. Yes, gone! My blood sugar and A1C and all the the other numbers will be in the normal range. To get there I have several goals: Get my blood sugar down to around 100, my A1C to between 5.5 and 6.0, lose 10 more pounds, and get my BMI down to 24.9 or less. I am trending down in all these areas and have made significant progress but still have a ways to go. I have also read several books on diabetes and looked at a lot of websites.
So I have a Vision and now I have some Goals. What are my strategies to achieve those Goals?
1. I am going to increase my daily exercise to 1.5 hours a day
2. I am going to eat less
3. I am going to eat better
4. I am going to add supplements like cinnamon and vinegar
5. I am going to reduce the bread, potatoes, rice, etc
6. I am going to increase the veggies and fruits
7. I am going to drink more water
8. I will continue to read and study about diabetes

I am already doing all the of the above but I am going to do more of it and do it better. Summarizing the above, it all comes down to exercising more, eating better and eating less, and that really applies to all of us in 2011. Dr. James Fries, who is an expert on aging at Stanford University said, "If you had to pick one thing that came closest to the fountain of youth, it would have to be exercise." So lets all get out there do something and make it fun! Snow shoe, cross country ski, walk, hike, bike, kayak, run, whatever. A recent study showed that for every minute we walk, we add 3 minutes to our life! If we started a walking program in our early twenties, by the time we reached our 60's we could add 2 years to our lives!! Not bad!
And as far as food goes, as a nation, we all need to cut out the junk and eat better. We should incorporate more fruits, fresh veggies, salads and water into our diets. We should have more bran, fish, soy, whole grains and plant oils. We should reduce the sugar and salt and watch the chemicals in our food and try to reduce foods shipped and stored in plastic.
So imagine if we all did this. The health care costs would drop and the physical fitness and overall health of the nation would increase dramatically.
So write down your goals for this year. Put them in a place where you see them several times a day. Studies have shown that if we write them down we are 10 times more likely to achieve them. And at the end of the year, I hope to see you at the finish line! Thanking you for your time, this time, until next time, FRAN
