Visioning-How To Get Where You Want To Go
Visioning is not a recent business trend. Its actually been around for a while. "Your old men shall dream dreams. Your young men shall see Visions. And where there is no Vision, life shall perish from the earth." That was written in the Scriptures a long time ago!! Well, we are not going to die if we don't have a Vision in our life. But we have a much better chance of achieving our lifetime dreams and goals if we have a Vision and what goes with it.
And having a Vision applies to everyone- students graduating from high school or college, those just starting their careers, those in mid-life and those who have just retired. And it applies not just to individuals, but to businesses large and small and non profits as well.
What do we mean by having a Vision? Its your dreams. How to you perceive yourself or your company? Here are a few examples. The Alzheimers Association Vision is to eliminate Alzheimers in our lifetime. Pennies for Poverty Vision is to eliminate poverty in the Newburyport area by 2025. If you are retired, maybe your Vision is to live to be 100!
And at a more individual level, maybe your Vision is to weigh what you did at your high school graduation or when you got out of the service or on your wedding day. Maybe your Vision is to be free of Pre-Diabetes. And if you are a company, maybe your Vision is to be the world class manufacturer of such and such products. You get the idea.
And we should all think BIG here. Shoot for the moon and if we miss, we will land amongst the stars!! Donald Trump wrote a great book about this called Think Big-Make It Happen In Business And Life. Maybe you want to invent the next Facebook or to make a million bucks by the time you are 30.
And having a Vision is just the beginning. What goes along with it is what are your Values? What do you believe in? What is your Moral Compass that is going to guide you through life? Is it hardwork, perseverance, empathy, compassion, dignity, respect for others, etc. These are the guiding principles that will keep you focused on the end result.
Then there is your Mission, which is your purpose in life. Its different than a Vision. I volunteer for the Alzheimer's Association. As I said above, the Vision is to eliminate Alzheimer's in our lifetime. My Mission is to increase awareness of this horrible disease and to help families who are undergoing this journey. See the difference?
And the key to success in all of this is to set your goals, either short-term or long-term or both. Studies have shown that anyone who writes down their goals and refers to them often is 10 times more likely to achieve them. 10 times!!! So write down your goals, paste them on the mirror and when you brush and floss each day, look at them. They will get ingrained in your self-conscious. And carry them around with you. Make up your own card. You will find that this stuff really works.
And of course, you have to have Strategies to achieve your Goals. Write down the Strategies for each Goal. That's how you will get there. And once a month, check how you are doing. That's where the Metrics come in-just measuring how you are doing, where you are running ahead or behind. This will guide you on what else needs to be done.
In summary, this is powerful stuff. I worked for a company that ran its entire business based on this. We were one of the top companies in the country. I have used it in my own life and am using it now. You can see a presentation on this at my website www.franlarkin.com and I would be glad to meet with anyone to help you get this in place for you or your company. We have over 3 million students graduating from high school and college each year. My Vision is that each one has a card with all this written down!
Thanking you for your time, this time, until next time! FRAN
